Love, Loss, Grief, 2023
We are a team, a supportive, inter-species family. Because they were all within a few years of age, I was aware that I’d experience a lot of loss one day. But I wasn’t prepared for this much grief. It feels so very raw, like a physical rip in my chest. Grief rises and falls like a well of water in my chest. Often flowing over the rim and out my eyes. When love is deep, so too is the grief. Grief is the consequence of love.
Parallels
The difference between their experience and mine is that I escaped. They almost never do. There are laws to protect me from other humans. They have none. Their situation almost always ends up in a violent death.
Halloween, terror & our food.
As Halloween comes again this year we look forward to all things that frighten us and give us an adrenaline rush of fear: zombie costumes, horror movies, fake blood and guts, blood dripping knives, axes, chain saws, violence. We like to pretend to do things that we would never dream of acting out in real life. Yet, every day, we subject billions of animals to the very things that terrify us the most every time we sit down to eat their flesh, milk, and eggs.
Ontario rancher has a change of heart
Less than an hour from Toronto lies an oasis amidst intense animal farming country. Farmhouse Garden Animal Home was founded after Mike Lanigan, a third generation rancher, had a change of heart.
Full Circle
Although there have been many distractions and forks in the road, I have come full circle. Back to the reason that I was put on this planet.
